In today’s lesson, I’ll be giving an overview of modern bra design, and take a look at some bras of the past.
You might be surprised to hear that bra design hasn’t changed much since the 50s! Most of the basic design concepts behind the bra styles we see today have been around for a long time. The real innovations in bra design are in materials and fitting technology.
In the video, I also clear up some misconceptions around bra style terminology. What exactly is a full cup? A demi bra? Or a balconette? Understanding these different styles can help you develop a clearer picture of the bras you’d like to make and how they suit your needs. (In week two, we will talk about developing a style that fits and flatters you.)

- Take a closer look at the details of a bra that inspires you, whether it is one you own or from a shop photo. What kind of seams does the cup have? What is the shape of the neckline? (Square, plunging, sweetheart?) Any unique details in the band?
